Generations

Christopher M. Nelson, 2025

This piece was written to commemorate the teaching career of Mr. Heath Wolf on the occasion of his retirement as Director of Bands at Farmington Junior High School (Farmington, UT). Heath’s 32 years of teaching, serving, and inspiring did not begin with his first public school teaching position, nor will it likely end with his “retirement,” as is common among music educators. My goal in writing this piece was to pay homage to Heath’s influence on several generations of music students.

A simple theme is built upon pitches which spell H-E-A-T-H (B-E-A-C-B), and this theme is presented in a variety of contexts throughout the work. While the theme is relatively unchanged (representing Heath’s consistent and positive influence), the context in which it is presented varies widely (representing the wide variety of circumstances which educators must adapt to and experience during a day, a school year, or an entire career). A drumset is utilized throughout the piece as it is Heath’s favorite percussion instrument, and several opportunities for the drummer to improvise are included.

Lastly, an optional part to be played on a plastic music chair (i.e. Wenger stackable) is included and can be played by as many players as desired. I don’t know of a single percussion teacher who, when quickly needing something on which to tap a beat or demonstrate a passage, hasn’t played on the back of one of these chairs. This part recalls those countless moments in Heath’s career when he refused to let his surroundings dictate the quality of his instruction.

Generations was commissioned by Farmington High School Bands, under the direction of Brek Mangelson,                       with Al Williams coordinating the commission.

Crusades: Journey of Ages

Jason Hayes, 2026

This piece was written by Jason Hayes, a current senior in Farmington's wind ensemble. After sustaining a performance injury two years ago that barred him from playing the trumpet, Jason turned to music composition as a way to stay in touch with his musical side. At the beginning of his senior year, he found some interesting chords on the piano, and decided to expand them into a short musical loop. After realizing how much he liked the loop, he expanded it further with hopes to compose an entire multi-movement piece.

After six months of composing, Jason finished Crusades: Journey of Ages with a total runtime of seven minutes, a feat he thought he'd never be able to reach. The piece isn't just music though, it's a story of the human experience.

Introduction - Creation

Creation represents the beginning of life itself, and the start of a grand adventure.

Movement I - Expedition

Expedition symbolizes the whimsical thrills of life, and the forces that oppose us at every turn.

Movement 2 - Honor

Honor represents the time of remembrance for those who've passed on. It's a salute to the dead, and an oath to honor their legacy.

Movement 3  - Destiny

Destiny puts the future front and center, remembering the past, and looking to a bright future.

Unlike traditional multi-movement pieces, Crusades: Journey of Ages flows seamlessly between each movement, with no gaps. While the composition was originally written for a full orchestra including strings, winds, and a choir, an arrangement was created to be played exclusively by the Farmington High School Wind Ensemble.
